A Brief History
We came here in 1988 and have worked hard to develop and enhance the farm and our land. We began work on the self catering cottages in 2006 and opened them to our first guests in 2007. Since then we've welcomed guests from the world over. When you stay at Southlands, we want you to experience as much of country life as you can so put your wellies on and dig in!
Our Animals
We have a small herd of beautiful Dexter rare-breed cows, two rare New Zealand Kune Kune pigs, and a dozen lively egg-laying hens on the farm. We're always adding to the family so by the time you arrive, who knows what new arrivals we'll have.
Our Green Credentials
We do everything we can to reduce our impact on the environment, including minimising waste, using renewable energy and supporting the local community.

The Garden
We grow our own fruit and vegetables in our organic, chemical-free garden. Feel free to wander around or find a quiet spot to relax in with a book.
Birds Around Southlands
We welcome over twenty species of birds to the farm and make them feel welcome with plenty of nesting boxes and feeders.

Flora Around Southlands
Some of the country's most beautiful native species of plant are found in and around the farm. In addition to the many miles of hedgerows and trees we've planted, you'll also be able to enjoy the striking diversity of native and grasses.

Where We Are
The farm and the cottages are in the centre of Gunnerton, a lovely little village nestled deep in the middle of Nothumberland. We're surrounded by farm land (some of which is our own) and are in easy reach of Hadrian's Wall, the town of Hexham and a whole host of other interesting places to visit.
“A thoroughly enjoyable stay in this warm cottage with comfy beds and proper baths as well as showers. Thanks for the kindly touches-fresh flowers and fruit from the garden.”
Joan, Faversham, Kent

A Living History
Southlands is a small, 37-acre working farm with a story stretching back hundreds of years. We believe the farmhouse is one of a handful of mediaeval Northumbrian longhouses built during the reign of Henry VIII.
These days, the cottages are a little more insulated than they might have been then, and a lot more comfortable for our guests!
