A little glimmer of Spring
15th February 2009 | Southlands Farm News
Today we woke up to the sun shining through the curtains it was the most glorious morning. We set off to feed the pigs up the fields and I noticed a little gathering of tiny white heads with tight green stems proudly peeping above the grass and mud. Like tiny banners announcing spring will be here. I know it seems silly to put so much emphasis on such tiny flowers but for me they fill me with hope for Spring a new start buds bursting, birds singing and the garden coming to life again of lighter nights and lambs being born.

The snow drops, aconites and scented pink heads of viburnum make me smile.
Whilst reading The Ecologist this morning (a great magazine with up to date news and views on the environment) I read that the colder weather makes Snowdrops last longer and you can find out the best places to see these much loved little gems at National Garden Scheme participants, The Royal Horticultural Society and The National Trust Scotland even has its own Snowdrop festival. The Annual Scottish Snowdrop Festival which runs from 1 February to 16th March and holds walks and events in more than 50 locations thought Scotland. There is even a Snowdrop conference on the 20th Feb! See www.white.visitscotland.com
Nearer to home have a woodland walk at the lovely garden station at Langley and lovely walks at by the river at Wallington Hall. Here on the farm you don’t have to look far as the orchard soon becomes carpeted in white broken only by the odd snakes head fritillary stretching above with its beautiful purple drooping heads and beneath the stone mossy walls snowdrops cluster like a white lace edging ….happy hunting and I hope they make you smile too!
