Fiesta the Cow surprises us!
20th June 2009 | Southlands Farm News

I have been keeping an eye on Fiesta other wise known as “moody cow” for a few days now. We bought her with the knowledge she had been ” running with a bull” but were not sure she was definitely pregnant until a few weeks ago. She is a beautiful Dexter and very trim so she didn’t seem huge at all. I started to notice a change in her behaviour on the Saturday morning. I walked the dogs and she was lying down in the field, head to one side and strangely another young heifer was licking her. She seemed uncomfortable and let me sit quite close to her…. Normally Fiesta would be alert eyes all over, watching what was going on. I now think the calf must have been turning. I monitored her several times during the day and evening but nothing. My parents came over on Monday to help paint our new stables and we set too with great enthusiasm, however the faster the paint went on the heavier the rain came down until we were taking refuge inside the stables, then the thunder and lightning …..then no electricity.
We made a dash for the house and actually watched as huge drops of rain pelted down.I had left our bedroom window open and the window sill was drowned!I rushed here and there closing windows, turning computers off in the odd moments the lights came back on and we sat with a cup of tea, luckily we have an Aga! As the rain pored down and great booms filled the sky above us, we sat cosy in our kitchen. Little did I realise that whilst all this was happening something else very special was happening. As the rain became more of a gentle patter I went to see Fiesta and I took a quiet gasp as there snuggling close to his Mummy legs was a little calf. He was tall and bony with rather large ears like a little fawn. It was truly magical and to see and I felt very privileged to be there. The children came to see but as she is our ” moody cow” and a very protective Mummy we gave her space to get on with her baby. As we walked away we heard that wonderful gentle comforting hum as Fiesta called to her little calf we have named Storm!
