Poppy & Ruby find a man……

19th January 2009 | Dee's Diary

Poppy and Ruby our two Kune Kune pigs have been with us for just over a year and an executive decision was made that a husband had to be found!

I searched the Kune Kune society for Boars but they were all a long way off to take for a quick romance and the stud fees seemed rather a lot some were £100! And we had two girls to sort out. The next line of thought was what about buying a Boar so my search began…

corky-2

Some sent photo of their Boars but none seemed quite right! I searched other people who kept Kune Kunes and eventually found a very helpful lady who had just had a phone call from someone wanting to sell a two year old Boar! I phoned immediately and found he lived in Stirling. He sounded perfect with good breeding and strangely his blood lines came from a place called Te Wangai in New Zealand where Charles had worked on a sheep station many years ago……it was meant to be.

Catherine, his owner was hoping to go to Kelso races and we arranged to meet near there the following week We hitched on the trailer and just as we were leaving the Farm Catherine rang to say the races had been cancelled… a new plan had to be arranged. We decided to carry on that day and meet half way between here and Sterling at a service station. It was a freezing cold day and we got the giggles with Catherine as we reversed our horse boxes up as close to move “Mr. Piggy” from one trailer to the other, the thought of headline news reading “Pig escapes on motorway!” was too much.

Pig in trailer we headed home.

After a four hour non stop round trip we dropped the tail gate over the fence and “Mr Piggy” now renamed “Corky” by Charles met his girls. At first I think they thought he was a little on the scruffy side he had been kept inside for the winter and didn’t smell quite so good and I am not so sure they thought he was such a dish either! However our girls are smart girls and realizes that any pig is better than no pig so after being fussy, shy and bashful they got chatting….I was a little worried as we only have one pig house so if they didn’t get on we had a problem .You can imagine my relief when I went to see them later in the evening and the torch light shone on three noses happily snuggled up together.

Since then it has been a very happy marriage and they muddle along very nicely. Corky always has the funniest expression one that says “Don’t mess with me” but really he is a very friendly easy chap with lovely markings and fingers crossed maybe by Easter we may hear the patter of tiny trotters!
