The Garden in June
20th June 2009 | Southlands Farm News

I think June is one of my favorite months in the garden, possibly because everything is full of promise just budding, just in bloom. The vegetable garden looks lush and alive again. My seeds have survived and the tiny plants are growing strong and look bright against the rich brown soil.. The tomatoes in the greenhouse are tall and full of tiny yellow flowers. The sweet peas have just been planted out and we have made teepee’s for them to climb. Apple blossom is one of the most beautiful and our new espalier fruit trees in the vegetable garden are looking like we may have a good crop. The elderflower is out, the smell of the white lilac fills the air, the proud heads of our iris stand tall in the borders only topped by the gorgeous alliums with their pom pom heads, but my favorite has to be the roses. In the last few years I have got quite carried away planting roses and this June we have more than ever. From wondrous old rose blooms to voluptuous ones like” St Swithun”, “Winchester Cathedral” and “The Alnwick” rose to a mass of tiny “Ballerina” about to burst into life above the garden arch and the wonderful shrub rose “Rugosa Alba” that fills the hedges with its delicious fragrance. The peonies are beautiful too with their huge heads, last year I planted several Sarah Bernhardt which are making their first debut. As I type I am looking at a small jug that sits on my desk overflowing with three pink rose heads mixed with Alchemilla I piked today….. June in the garden is truly wonderful!
