My good friend Alan Hawkins moved to Longwitton Shoot as keeper last year, now in his second year the shoot has taken set up Northumberland Clays.com built a shooting ground where he can continue his particular talent of infusing, even the crummiest of shots like myself, with the idea that if we point the bang stick at our desired supper it will indeed fall from the sky.
For competent shots that can only be good news, unfortunatly for me the Longwitton effect seems to wear off as I head home. Suffice to say the man is a local legend with a wonderfully dry sense of humour to boot.
I went along with Mark Wells to try it out on Friday, it was huge fun, I even managed to hit a few. From Southlands a trip to Longwitton definitely has the bones of a great day out:
The shooting ground is 25 miles east of here, there are three beautiful routes to get there, you can take the Sweethope road, through the new Green Rigg windfarm and take a view on mans wonders set in natures wonders. Or you can take the Plaschetts road and visit Thockrington Church which is one of our oldest parish churches (1100AD). Or for a more recent history go via Wallington Hall, much-loved home to generations of the unconventional Trevelyan family. and Kirkharle Courtyard Birth place of Capability Brown on the way. So a day out for all the family.
