It was the most amazing sunny Easter weekend here in Northumberland so we made the most of it and started work on the vegetable garden. Last year once production had ground to a halt & potatoes and onions were lifted we covered the raised beds with well rotted horse manure then with black breathable sheeting and weighted it down against the winds. It has made the start to this season so much easier and saved a great deal of time weeding!.Once the beds were dug over we were left with lovely rich soil with plenty of worms!
This year we have planted onion sets Red Kamen and White Sutton and used the spare chicken runs to cover them to keep the birds off until they take hold. We made a lattice frame for the sweet peas and got those in too…so all in all a pretty good start. Next week it will be the potatoes which are chitting happily in the cool dark larder….
