This takes me back to my first year of uni. It looks like <i>Dytiscus marginalis,</i> a diving water beetle. It appears to have rear legs shaped a little like paddles tucked away and finding it near the pond would corroborate. I believe they're edible, if things get really bad. It’s a tasty snack!
