About Southlands

Where it began…

Charles and Dee moved to Southlands in 1988 and have worked hard to develop and enhance the farm ever since. The farm is located in the center of Gunnerton, a lovely little village nestled deep in the middle of Nothumberland.

The 38 acre smallholding was in need of renovation and over 36 years has seen gardens emerge, the farmhouse expanded, hedges replaced and plantations grown to encourage the wildlife back and finally the cottages created so guests can enjoy this oasis also.

Work began on restoring the barns into self catering cottages in 2006 and we welcomed our first guests in 2007. The cottages are designed to be a rural retreat away from the buzz of busy life, but for those who wish to adventure some more we enjoy welcoming you into our country life.

The Garden and beyond

While you are at Southlands you can enjoy our beautiful gardens. Beyond the yard you will find several gardens, including a large front garden with herbaceous borders and a pond, the orchard and the ornamental vegetable garden. We are passionate about sustainability and grow our own fruit and vegetables in our organic, chemical-free garden. Please feel free to wander around the gardens at your leisure or find a quiet spot to relax in with a book.

Further still are 36 acres of pasture which you can explore and we are more than happy to show you around the farm in a tour.

We welcome over twenty species of birds to the farm. We make them feel welcome with plenty of nesting boxes and feeders. Some of the country’s most beautiful native species of plant are found in and around the farm. In addition to the miles of hedgerows and trees we’ve planted and maintained, you’ll also be able to enjoy the striking diversity of native and grasses. Farmyard Friends

Southlands Farm is home to several furry and feathered friends. We have a collection of Labradors and terriers, several chickens who produce your welcome basket eggs, two horses, and herd of pedigree Dexter cattle.

We’re always adding to the family so by the time you arrive, who knows what new arrivals we’ll have. Meet our animals.
