Our Green Credentials
Here at the farm we take our green credentials, we care deeply about reducing our impact on the environment and helping our guests to do the same. We’ve built the cottages to be as environmentally friendly as possible. We plan to have even more going on in the future.
Farm produce
At Southlands, we are very passionate about knowing where your food comes from and care greatly about reducing food miles. With this ethos in mind, we take every opportunity to be as self-sufficient as possible.
We have hens that we buy from Fresh Start for Hens You can read about them in our blog. They are very charming and friendly and they give us lots of eggs. Some of which you may find in your welcome basket.
We have a herd of Dexter cattle at Southlands, these small cattle have fantastic temperament, and also produce the most delicious marbled beef which we sell from the farm shop. Our farm shop is open on Saturdays to the general public and guests of the cottages. Most of the time we have a range of steaks and roasts and packs of mince, stewing beef among other delicious cuts.
We grow vegetables in our raised bed vegetable garden and make any surplus available to our guests.
Composting
We compost as much of our waste as we can, and will be very pleased if you can help. We also have a flock of hungry hens who produce eggs for the welcome basket who are always happy to help polish off any vegetables you don’t want!
Heating and electricity
We have installed a small 12kv wind turbine, this produces most of the electricity for the cottages, the house and workshop. The surplus is sold to the National Grid and any shortfall we buy from Ecotricity.
The hot water is generated by solar panels, unless there is no sun, in which case the most efficient oil fired boiler that we could find takes over the job. In the future we’d like to use bio fuel for this.
The cottages are insulated as well as can be for a building of this nature and all four of the cottages are fitted with log fires or wood burners are carbon neutral.
Stewardship Scheme
Our smallholding has completed a 10-year higher level stewardship scheme. The scheme included the restoration of dry stone walls, the planting of hedges and the creation of a wetland scrape and mixed tree coppices to create a range of habitats and encourage farmland wildlife at Southlands.
We grow traditional wildflower meadows and hay crops which not only look beautiful in the summer months but also help to encourage bees, butterfly and insects. We have planted over one hundred trees for your enjoyment and that of generations to come.
