Green Fingers at Southlands

The Garden – as seen in English country Garderns magazine. Southlands Farm is a gardener’s paradise. Dee’s green fingers have turned an open field into beautiful informal English country gardens overflowing with roses, peonies and catmint.

Roses are a passion of Charles and Dee’s, they thrive at Southlands possibly down to the good manure and now 32 years after its creation the garden boasts an extensive collection. In 2010 the gardens were extended yet again to create a vegetable garden with raised beds and a 1950s steel greenhouse.

Beyond the gardens the fields are managed under the countryside stewardship scheme in an effort to create a diverse and wildlife rich environment we have planted over a kilometre of hedgerows and worked hard to encourage wild flowers and wildlife. We have made several field corner plantations some of which are being developed into food forests which are lovely meditative places to relax and explore whilst you are here.

Whilst staying here if you would like to help in the garden at all, please ask, you don’t have to be a green fingered wizard.

Wallington Hall. NE61 4AR Historic house with beautiful gardens, greenhouses, ponds, walks, 3 play areas and a squirrel hide.
Herterton House Gardens Morpeth NE61 4BN 01670 774278. A rare and special 16th-century farmhouse with topiary, physic and flower gardens, a labour of love. Check opening times.
Stanton Hall Gardens and Nursery Morpeth NE65 8PR 01670 772641 closed Mondays except for most bank holidays. Many plants homegrown, plenty to see and buy.
Bradley Gardens, Sled lane, Wylam NE41. Lovely garden, great retail therapy and delicious lunch in the old glass house.

Here at the farm we care deeply about reducing our impact on the environment and helping our guests to do the same.

We’ve built the cottages to be as environmentally friendly as possible. This includes using renewable energy, composting, growing our own food, supporting local producers, and plating one hundred trees!
